Shopping and Leisure
For the size of the Island, Guernsey has an extensive range of shops and stores. Well known brand names, including Boots, Next, Marks & Spencer, HMV, W. H. Smith, Monsoon and Accessorize sit alongside smaller, unique boutiques. Other famous names operate under franchises or from within local department stores on a concession basis including Jaeger, Karen Millen, YSL and Boss.
The Island also has a number of DIY stores such as B&Q, Norman Piette and R H Gaudion, several garden centres including Le Friquet Garden Centre, Earlswood Nursery, Stan Brouard Garden & Leisure, and a selection of quality emporiums selling kitchens, bathrooms, ceramics and homewares.
There are small neighbourhood shopping centres located in St Martin’s, St Sampson’s, Cobo and St Peter’s, as well as a selection of supermarkets, fuel stations, banks, dry cleaners, post offices and other essential stores located across the Island. Larger supermarkets are represented and include Waitrose, Co‑Op Grand Marche and M&S Simply Food, which alongside smaller, independent grocery stores, butchers and bakers selling local and continental breads, provide a balance of national and local shopping choices.
Fresh produce such as meat, cheeses, jams, eggs etc. are also available from weekly Farmers’ Markets running throughout the summer season. Fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers can also be purchased off hedges throughout the Island, commonly known as ‘hedge veg’, where money is left in ‘honesty boxes’. Freshly caught fish and seafood are also widely available on the Island, sometimes directly off the Quay side.
